Professor Albert S C Chan assumedoffice of the 4th President and Vice-Chancellor of Hong Kong Baptist University on 1 July 2010.


Professor Chan received hisbachelor’s degree from International Christian University in Japan in 1975 andhis MSc and PhD degrees from the University of Chicago respectively in 1976 and 1979. Upon graduation from Chicago, he started an industrial career at the Monsanto Corporate Research Laboratories where he had worked for 13 years,rising through the ranks of Senior Research Chemist, Research Specialist,Senior Research Specialist andfinally Monsanto Fellow. In 1992-1993 he taughtat National Taiwan University asa Visiting Expert. Since joining the Hong Kong Polytechnic University in 1994,Professor Chan has served as Chair Professorand Head of the Department of Applied Biology and Chemical Technology, Dean ofthe Faculty of Applied Scienceand Textiles, and Vice President (Research Development).


Professor Chan’s research areasinclude the application of chiralcatalysts in asymmetric syntheses and theirindustrial applications, development of pharmaceutical products and related processes, pharmaceutical and nutritional products based on Chinese medicines,novel anti-cancer drugs discovery and development, new organic chemical process and their industrial applications.


Elected as Member of the Chinese Academy of Sciences in 2001,Professor Chan has received numerous prestigiousawards in cluding the National Natural Science Award of China (second class),Japan Society of Synthetic Chemistry Lectureship Award, and the Japan Societyfor the Promotion of ScienceInvitation Fellowship.


Professor Chan has enjoyed a verydistinguished academic career,with 22 US patents and 18 Chinese patentsgranted, six books and more than 450SCI journal papers published, as well asmore than 8,500 citations onpublications.


Since 1994, he has secured a total of16 General Research FundGrants from the Research Grants Council (RGC) of HongKong, and also a coll aborative Areas of Excellence project on Molecular Technology for Drug Discovery and Synthesis which received funding of HK$64million from the UGC.


Professor Chan also served as Founding Director, Shenzhen State Key Laboratory (Nurturing Platform) of Chinese Medicine and Molecular Pharmacology; Founding Director of Shenzhen Key Laboratory of Chinese Medicine;member of the National Defense Technology and Industry Committee for the Moon Project; National Science and Technology Evaluation Expert; and was the Honorary Founding Dean of the School of Pharmaceutical Sciences, Sun Yat-sen University,and Chairman of Hong Kong Chemical Society.
